FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
University Receives $10,000 Grant from Local Women’s Club
Hamilton ON … The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW-Hamilton) has pledged a $10,000.00 grant to McMaster University in memory of one of its long-time members. On Wednesday, September 27, 2017, CFUW-Hamilton presented the first $5,000.00 to the McMaster University Institute for Music and the Mind (MIMM; https://mimm.mcmaster.ca/) in support of a Florence Martin Graduate Student Research Grant.
This is the first donation of a two-year commitment to fund graduate student research at the LIVELab—a performance theatre and testing centre for the scientific study of music, sound and movement. CFUW-Hamilton President Myrtle Greve made the presentation in the LIVELab , after which representatives from the Club toured the facility.
This research grant was made possible through the generosity of CFUW-Hamilton member Florence Martin. Miss Martin always supported the organization’s Scholarship Fund over the years. When she died in 2015 in her 100th year, she left a bequest to the Club with the proviso that it be used for scholarships. The Institute for Music and the Mind was selected as the recipient of the research grant in acknowledgement of Miss Martin’s love of music.
Miss Martin was born in Grimsby, Ontario in 1915 and lived there all her life. An active volunteer in the community and at her church, she was Grimsby’s Citizen of the Year twice, in 1963 and 1983.
CFUW-Hamilton President Myrtle Greve noted that “Scholarships are an important part of what CFUW is all about. CFUW-Hamilton members are proud to be giving this gift to honour the memory of one of our outstanding members.”
CFUW-Hamilton was founded in 1925. Currently, in addition to the special Martin research grant, the Club gives $6,000.00 annually in scholarships to McMaster University, Brock University Hamilton Campus, and Mohawk College.
CFUW Hamilton members recently toured McMaster University’s Institute for Music and the Mind (MIMM). Please visit our CFUW-Hamilton Facebook page to view a video of the of the event.
