1. Notice of Motion

Background: On May 5 President Debbie Welland received a request for financial assistance from the History Department at Westmount Secondary School. Natalie Lopez ,a student at Westmount, has qualified for the International History Olympiad by successfully competing at the Regional and National Levels. The competition is in Hawaii from July 17 to 24 and will cost approximately $3,000.00 to attend, The airfare is approximately $800.00. Without assistance Natalie will be unable to attend. After conferring with the Executive, we believe this request meets our criteria on a one-time basis.

At the AGM on Tuesday, May17 I will make the following motion:

Moved that CFUW-Hamilton donate $800.00 to Westmount Secondary School to assist Natalie Lopez in attending the International History Olympiad in Honolulu , Hawaii from July 17 to 24 2016.

2. May 17 is the deadline for submitting your votes on the issue of Canada leaving or remaining as a member of GWI. If you are coming to the AGM please bring your ballots. If not, please call or email Debbie to give her your response.

There will be a motion made at the April 19 General Meeting of CFUW-Hamilton. The motions will be presented by the Scholarship Committee and were recommended by the Executive at the April 5 Executive meeting.

Moved that we increase the CFUW-Hamilton Award to Brock University from $500.00 to $1,000.00 effective May 2016.
Background: Since 2009 we have awarded $500.00 per year to a graduating student (preferably female) in the Faculty of Education, Pre-service teacher education at the Hamilton Campus. The successful recipient will demonstrate excellent potential in teaching and be involved in community affairs beyond the University.
Costs have increased considerably since 2009.

 

Thanks to our guest speaker Marina Endicott , CFUW-Hamilton , had another successful “Scholarship Fund” fundraising event. If you missed the evening, Marina was “terrific, very personable and entertaining”.

We also extend our thanks to our  Author Night Committee  and Bryan Prince Booksellers . All of whom worked hard to make the evening a success.

The Cresmont has advised that effective April 2016 they will no longer be able to accommodate evening meetings. Arrangements have been made to meet, instead, at the Spectator Auditorium. There are some restrictions in place and you will not be able to purchase your AGM Dinner Tickets that night. Please contact your executive to find out how to secure your ticket

“Stories of Success: Indigenous Women-Centered Teaching and Learning”

Brock University,Tecumseh Centre for Aboriginal Research and Education

Jennifer’s work is driven by her passion to contribute to indigenous community well being. Her research interests include indigenous maternal pedagogy, cultural identity formation and indigenous women’s literature as a source of empowerment.   

Author Night details have been finalized. Now we need to promote the event. Below you will find a copy of the event flyer and we are asking club members help us distribute them. Perhaps by printing them and posting them on the bulletin boards of the social activities we attend. Maybe posting a print copy at your local library , favorite store , hair dresser or nail salon. You can easily download the flyer and share it via email with your friends and family or go to the bottom of the post and use the share buttons.

This is our only fundraising event and it really is one of Hamilton’s premier literary highlights of the year. Let’s get the word out it is going to be a wonderful evening.
