CFUW HAMILTON

We recently became aware that long time CFUW-Hamilton member Ethel Lapp underwent surgery this week at the Juravinski to repair a badly broken femur . She came through the procedure nicely but will face a long recovery period.

Violence against women is pervasive and affects all sectors of society. CFUW-Hamilton offers its support to women in distress with it’s support to Inasmuch House in Hamilton. We are asking that our members take a stand against family violence by helping to provide the essentials needed by local women and children who are striving to live free of abuse.

On Tuesday March 15, 2015 at our General Meeting we are taking another collection of toiletries, clothing and small toys for Inasmuch House . We will take anything that might be needed by someone who has had to leave her home and many of her belongings.

For over a decade CFUW Hamilton has been pleased to be able to present one Hamilton’s premier literary events. This year we have been fortunate in securing award winning author Mariana Endicott as our guest. The event will take place Thursday April 14, 2016 at the Spectator Auditorium, 44 Frid St. S., Hamilton ON at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $15 and are available at our general meetings  , on line from  Eventbrite Tickets  (includes a small service fee) or from Bryan Prince Bookseller ( cash only).

” Three Sisters: the experiences of the First Women at McMaster 1930-31″

Dr. Lei is a committed advocate for heritage preservation. She believes if we are to survive as a city, it is vital to preserve Hamilton’s history for future generations.

There was some discussion at the January meeting about how we can help the Syrian refugees coming to Hamilton. CFUW-Hamilton is not in a position to take on sponsorship of a family but there was interest in helping. So after a bit of research we are forwarding the following information on to our members who wish to become involved.

Locally the Wesley Center is coordinating efforts in Hamilton. Their contact information can be found on their web site at http://wesley.ca.

We also understand from last week’s Spectator article Mental Health Funding for Refugee Children that an organization called Thrive Child and Youth Trauma Services is the local organization that is responsible for providing mental health care to the Syrian refugee children. Their contact information can be found on their web site at http://www.thrivechildandyouth.ca and they too are looking for help from the public.

It is good to know that our membership continues to actively work toward making the VISION of CFUW a reality.

Susan Jasper, Telling Tales Festival Chair & Founder, was the guest speaker at CFUW-Hamilton’s November 17, 2015, meeting. There was considerable excitement and enthusiasm from the audience about Hamilton’s own free, one-day, family-friendly, outdoor festival (annually in September) and the association’s year-round commitment to promoting literacy and inspiring a love of reading. Part of Telling Tales commitment involves donating back to local literacy organizations. This week, Telling Tales donated $12,000 to three worthy recipients. The CFUW 2016 Proposed Resolution package has been released. Our Action and Advocacy Committee is preparing to review the following proposed resolutions;

1. Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls-Ending the Marginalization of Indigenous Women in Canadian Society
2. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder-Diagnosis, Intervention and Support Plan for children,adults and families affected by FASD
3. Strengthening the Pest Management Regulatory Agency in Order to Protect the Environment
4. Electoral Reform: Adding Proportionality to the Electoral System in Canada
5. Sustainable Development Goals
